John is an alumnus of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland and serves as a member of its board of visitors.

John originated and arranged all funding for the first Journalism Interactive Conference, held on the campus of the University of Maryland in October 2011.  The Conference was held at the University of Florida in February 2013, and at the University of Maryland in 2014.
